The Everyday Giving Pledge is a simple commitment to give more and give local.

Join other community members like you to increase your giving this year, and commit to giving at least 50% of your charitable contributions locally. Why now?
First, nonprofits need your support to meet the rising needs in the community. Second, beginning in the 2026 tax year, everyday tax filers who do not itemize their taxes can deduct cash donations to
charity—up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for joint filers*.Why local?
Across the DC region, hundreds of local nonprofits do essential work every day: they support families, strengthen neighborhoods, and respond to our community's needs in real time. They are trusted, deeply rooted, and understand local challenges firsthand.Nationally, fewer people are giving and when they give, they increasingly give to national causes and very large organizations. This means that fewer charitable dollars stay close to home, where they often make the greatest difference. If you’re in the DC region, we hope you’ll give the majority of your donations to local groups in our region. If you are outside the region, give where you live!

Why the pledge?
Because showing up has power. We’re asking you to take on an identity, to commit publicly that
community matters. To give local, and to make a difference close to home.We called it an everyday giving pledge because real change comes from those next to us in community, not a few mega donors. We want you to join us in reclaiming philanthropy, showcasing how it is not just an act of giving but an act of community. What does the deduction mean?*
A deduction is an amount you subtract from your income when you file so you don't pay tax on it. Most people take the standard deduction, which lets you subtract a set amount of your income based on your filing status.Beginning in the 2026 tax year, non-itemizers can deduct cash donations to charity. This means that all households are now eligible to receive a tax deduction for qualified charitable contributions. How much can I deduct?*
Single filers can deduct up to $1,000 of charitable contributions, and married couples filing jointly can deduct up to $2,000 of charitable contributions. What kinds of organizations can I donate to?*
You can make cash contributions to qualified tax exempt organizations, or 501(c)(3) organizations. This includes organizations with a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor, which serves as the "administrative home" for the organization.Contributions to donor-advised funds or private non-operating foundations are not eligible for this
deduction.Has this kind of deduction been done before?
Yes! A similar, temporary provision during the COVID-19 pandemic under the CARES Act allowed single filers to deduct up to $300 of charitable contributions, and joint filers up to $600 of charitable
contributions. In tax years 2020 and 2021, an estimated 90 million taxpayers claimed it.This new tax provision beginning in the 2026 tax year is permanent and not indexed for future inflation*.*This is not tax advice. Please seek a tax professional for specific advice on your specific tax situation.

The Everyday Giving Pledge is a simple commitment to give more and give local.

Spur Local launched the Everyday Giving Pledge as a community-led initiative inviting residents across the DMV to increase their giving this year, and commit to giving at least 50% of their charitable contributions to local nonprofits—supporting trusted nonprofits like yours that are working every day for our neighbors. The goal is simple but important: help make local giving a shared civic norm at a time when fewer charitable dollars are staying close to home. This is not about spotlighting large gifts or driving dollars to any single organization. It’s about lowering barriers, increasing participation, and strengthening the entire local nonprofit ecosystem.Partner with us to share this pledge with your community. Whether through a newsletter mention, social media post, or a short note, encourage your supporters to take the pledge!
Is this initiative open to all nonprofits?
Yes! This is not a fundraiser for Spur Local or for any single organization. Instead, it’s about helping local giving feel like a shared civic norm—and making it easier for people to say yes to supporting the nonprofits they care about. How do I participate after signing up?
After you sign up, we will send you a toolkit you can use to share more information about the Everyday Giving Pledge and charitable tax deduction with your supporters. We encourage you to share this widely via your email, social media, and other channels! As we report on this ongoing campaign, we will reach out to check in about how the pledge is going for your organization so that we can compile and send regional data about how the pledge is increasing giving to local nonprofits in Greater Washington. What if I have other questions?
